Our office uses the advanced Transcutaneous Electric Nerve Stimulation (TENS) unit to help treat TMJ disorders and other conditions. This state-of-the-art technology is a form of electronic muscle therapy and works to provide pain relief and muscle tone as part of your overall TMJ treatment plan.

TMJ disorders are characterized by imbalanced or misaligned jaws, which result in muscle tension and pain in the jaw, neck and head. Using the TENS unit, our dentist can diagnose your bite and determine which types of treatment will be most effective in helping you regain optimal oral function. The TENS unit uses electrical pulses to stimulate muscle contractions. This essentially allows your muscles to massage themselves, which in turn causes your muscle metabolism to generate heat that helps relieve pain and stiffness and improve mobility in your jaw. TENS also helps to release pain-blocking endorphins.

When you have completed your TENS therapy, we will work with you to develop a treatment plan that will provide you with the long-term results you need. Your treatment may include mouth guards, restorative dentistry or jaw surgery, depending on the severity of your TMJ disorder.

We invite you to call us today to learn more about the TENS unit and schedule your appointment with our experienced dentist.
