Whitening Root Canal Teeth

You may notice a difference between your natural teeth and the teeth that have had a root canal. Root canal teeth tend to be much darker and duller than the rest of your teeth. Root canal teeth will not blend naturally and nicely with the rest of your teeth because they are noticeably a different color. Teeth whitening will brighten and whiten your smile, but may not have the same results on your root canal teeth.

Why Root Canal Teeth are Darker

Teeth are made up of a tooth root, dentin that surrounds the root, and the enamel that surrounds the dentin. The enamel is the part of the tooth that is visible and it is naturally white in color. Dentin is naturally more yellow than enamel and it dulls and darkens with age. Enamel is translucent and the color of the dentin shows through. Dentin is also very porous allowing parts of the nerve to penetrate it. This causes the dentin to darken with age and, thus, darken the enamel. There are many reasons why teeth yellow. The color of dentin and the translucent nature of enamel are the natural reasons why teeth yellow over time.

When the roots of the teeth that need a root canal have died, the root turns a dark brown. The material of the dead root permeates the dentin surrounding it before the dead root is removed during the root canal treatment. The permeating of the dentin by the dead root causes the permanent discoloration of the tooth.

Teeth Whitening for Root Canal Teeth

There are three choices to whiten root canal teeth.
Teeth whitening treatments like the Opalescence Boost teeth whitening treatment will dramatically whiten your teeth. Root canal teeth will not whiten at the same rate as your other teeth and they need more whitening than your other teeth. Your root canal teeth may need more teeth whitening treatments than your other teeth and Las Vegas cosmetic dentist Dr. Laurie can concentrate the teeth whitening treatment on only your root canal teeth.

Some root canal teeth will need to be whitened from the inside out. Because the dead roots of these teeth have darkened the dentin under the enamel, the dentin needs to be whitened from inside the tooth in order for the enamel to be properly whitened on the outside.

Many root canal teeth require a dental crown to keep the tooth strong and prevent it from cracking because it is a dead tooth. Dead teeth can become fragile and need the extra support of a dental crown. Dental crowns are another way to whiten root canal teeth. Dental crowns can be created to match any color of tooth. Your dental crown does not need to be created to look the same color as it did before the crown. The dental crown can be created to be much whiter and brighter to match your natural teeth.

Porcelain veneers are a great choice for fixing many dental problems. Porcelain veneers can straighten crooked teeth, whiten yellowed teeth, and fix imperfections like cracks and chips. Porcelain veneers can also be applied to one or many teeth depending on your needs. Like dental crowns, porcelain veneers are created to look and feel like natural teeth and they can be created to look any color.
